Using Evie on a Windows 11 HP laptop

Evie is a web page, so there is nothing to download. Ten minutes of setup, then you just talk.

1Open Evie and sign in

  1. Open Microsoft Edge (already on the laptop) or Google Chrome. Evie hears “Hey Evie” best in these two.
  2. Go to evie-assistant.pages.dev.
  3. Sign in with your iBudi email and password. Evie uses your iBudi account for her brain, her voice, your reminders and your memory.

2Let her use the microphone

  1. Click the round core in the middle once. The browser asks Use your microphone? — choose Allow (in Edge pick “Allow while visiting the site” so it is not asked again).
  2. If no question appears: click the padlock / sliders icon at the left of the address bar → Microphone → Allow, then reload the page with F5.
  3. If the browser itself is blocked: Windows + I → Privacy & security → Microphone → turn on Microphone access and Let desktop apps access your microphone.
  4. Check the laptop’s own mute key. Most HP laptops have a key in the top row with a crossed-out microphone on it; a small light on that key means the microphone is off. Press it once so the light goes out.

While Evie is standing by for “Hey Evie”, the browser shows its microphone sign in the tab. That is expected — it is how she hears you call.

3Install her on the laptop (recommended)

Installed, Evie is an app of her own: her own window and icon, no tabs or address bar, one click from the taskbar. She keeps updating herself.

  1. Easiest: in Evie, click ☰ → Settings → Install Evie on this device → Install. (The row is there in Edge and Chrome until she is installed.) When Windows asks, tick Pin to taskbar.
  2. Or from the browser menu — Edge: … → Apps → Install this site as an app. Chrome: ⋮ → Cast, save and share → Install page as app.
  3. Make her start with the laptop: in Edge open edge://apps, click … on Evie → Auto-start on device login.

Or use the setup file: download Evie-Setup.cmd and double-click it. It puts an “Evie” shortcut on the Desktop and one in the Startup folder, so she opens in her own window every time you sign in to Windows. It installs nothing else. Windows may warn about a file from the internet — choose More info → Run anyway only if you downloaded it from this page. To undo it, delete the two “Evie” shortcuts (Windows + R, type shell:startup for the second one).

What “on her own” means. After setup she opens by herself, stays in her own window, listens for “Hey Evie” while that window is on screen, and her window still opens without internet. Her thinking, hearing and voice run on servers, so she needs the internet to answer, and she needs your iBudi sign-in. She cannot hear you while the laptop is asleep or locked.

4Talk to her

Start a conversationClick the core, or press Space. It turns blue: she is listening.
Keep talkingAfter each answer the microphone opens again by itself. Just carry on.
Stop her mid-sentenceClick the core while she is speaking.
Ask something while she is still thinkingClick the core and say it. It gets its own agent, and she reads that answer out when she is free.
End the conversationSay end conversation or that’s all, click End conversation, or just stay quiet for about ten seconds.
Call her againSay Hey Evie (also Hello Evie, Evie, wake up). You hear a short tone and the core turns blue.
Type insteadClick ☰ (top right) → Chat.

“Hey Evie” only works while her window is open and on screen, and only after you have clicked the core once since opening her. She cannot hear you when the window is minimised, behind another tab, or when the laptop is asleep or locked. Turn the call off or on in ☰ → Settings → Wake on “Hey Evie”.

She answers in the language you speak: English to English, Thai to Thai.

7Ask her to upgrade herself

Say what you want changed, for example make the clock bigger. It goes into her build queue and waits 8 seconds, with Cancel and Confirm beside it, then goes to the builder. When it is done she tells you and loads the new version.

8Closing the lid, sleep and battery

9If something is wrong

She does not hear youCheck the HP microphone mute key (light off), then step 2. Make sure no headset is plugged in that has taken over the microphone: Windows + I → System → Sound → Input.
You cannot hear herClick the speaker icon at the bottom right of the taskbar and raise the volume; check the speaker-mute key in the top row. Then ☰ → Settings and make sure the speaker is on.
“Hey Evie” does nothingClick the core once first; keep her window in front; check Settings → Wake on “Hey Evie” is On. In a noisy room, tap the core instead.
Her voice suddenly sounds differentThe daily allowance of her usual voice is used up, so the laptop’s own voice has taken over. It comes back the next day.
“Still thinking…” for a long timeShe asks up to three times, about 75 seconds. If she then gives up, ask again or make the question shorter.
The page looks old or stuckPress Ctrl + Shift + R to reload it fresh.
It asks you to sign in againYour iBudi sign-in ran out. Sign in once more; your chats and settings are still there.

Your chats list, pictures and settings are kept in this browser on this laptop. If you open Evie in a different browser or on another device, sign in there too; her memory and calendar come with your iBudi account, the rest starts fresh.
